Better Local Healthcare Campaign - meeting 28 February 2011
At the Maynard Arms, Park Road.


This meeting was a follow up to the recent 200-stong 'Is This The End of The NHS?' public meeting held in Muswell Hill by the Better Local Healthcare Campaign.


1. Present: 16 people; meeting chaired by Janet Shapiro

2. Focus of campaign: agreed that the key focus is on defeating the Health and Social Care Bill and combating privatisation of the NHS.

3. Key action points:

Urgency of campaign action was stressed; the bill is in committee stage until end of March and MPs of all parties need to be informed and persuaded to oppose the bill. We need to alert people to the threats posed by the Bill, and make clear what it could mean for services and the future of the NHS. Everyone to help by writing letters to local MPs, getting friends and relatives to write to theirs, circulating petitions to their contacts, contacting local media etc.
Website and electronic media: Sue Secher is updating it helped by Steve Ballard - please send useful articles, notices, links to Sue at **susie.secher@gmail.com**.
Agreed to explore use of Facebook (have link to website on people's Facebook pages) and video footage. Isaac Spain offered to help - from Tottenham.
Leaflet: need for new updated snappy leaflet agreed. Sandra and Isaac offered to draft, Linda to send them existing material.
Petitions: agreed we all need to circulate urgently among our contacts. Those already filled in at the meeting should be sent to MPs Lynne Featherstone and David Lammy.

GP collaboratives and patient panels: Sue Secher explained her involvement in GP patient panels which have been formed around the GP collaboratives in Haringey. Sue: to circulate information about the panels and how to get involved. Anne offered to circulate this information to residents' association via Dave Morris.
Public meeting in east Haringey: agreed to we need to organise this as quickly as possible. Sandra to check out dates for availability of Chestnuts Community Centre. Anne and Ricardo offered to help with organisation. Linda mentioned that Steve Flett has been trying to get a meeting off the ground in Tottenham as well.
Making the case against the Bill: need for real-life examples of possible impact of changes. Liz Rosenfeld to contact Jonathan Tomlinson, Hackney GP.
Lobbying Lynne Featherstone: agreed need to put her on the spot. See below for information on lobbying meeting. Also agreed: need to lobby other MPs and members of House of Lords. Lord Rea to be asked for help with this - Janet
Haringey Alliance for Public Services (HAPS): strategy meeting Sunday 6 March; Jan to attend and let people know we are aiming to arrange a public meeting about the Bill in Tottenham. Janet to get the leaflet produced by Jonathan Tomlinson, and purchase any useful leaflets from KONP for this and later leafleting.
Leafleting: agreed to leaflet and ask people to sign petitions on Saturday 11 March outside Wood Green Library from 11am.
NHS Haringey: agreed need to go to Board meetings Chris to attend next one on Weds 23 March at St Ann’s Hospital. This will be the last meeting of NHS Haringey board.
Media coverage – all to get our campaign publicised in local and national press.
Admin/e-mailing: Anne to help Janet with this work. Sandra and Isaac also offered to help with mailings.
Finance: agreed to make a donation to Keep Our NHS Public, and also possibly to youth centre in Muswell Hill (used for public meeting) - Janet. Also to put request for donations on website - Sue
Next campaign meeting: 7.30 - 9.30pm Monday 14 March Maynard Arms pub, Park Road, N8. Sandra to chair, Chris to minute.
